Woodbury, Levi
lawyer, jurist, congressman, governor, United States senator, was born Dec. 22, 1789, in Francestown, N. H. In 1816 he was appointed judge of the superior court of New Hampshire, and in 1819 settled in Portsmouth. In 1823 he was elected governor of New Hampshire.
He was speaker of the state house of representatives in 1825, and was a senator in congress from 1825 to 1831. He was appointed secretary of the navy in 1831, and was transferred to the treasury department as secretary, in 1834, by President Van Buren, and served until 1841. He was again a senator in congress from 1841 to 1845, when he was appointed a justice of the supreme court of the United States. He died Sept. 7, 1851, in Portsmouth, N. H.
