Wells, Henry Horatio

soldier, lawyer, state legislator, was born Sept. 17, 1823, in Rochester, N. Y. He was a member of the Michigan legislature from 1854 to 1856. He served in the war for the union from that state and became a brigadier-general by brevet. He settled in Virginia; was military governor of Virginia in 1868 and 1869 and resigned.

He was United States attorney for the district of Virginia from 1869 to 1872, when he resigned. In 1875 he entered upon the duties of United States attorney for the District of Columbia.
