Webster, Horace
educator, was born Sept. 21, 1794, in Hartford, Vt. In 1848 he became principal of the Free academy in New York city. Here he held the chair of moral and intellectual philosophy from 1851, and in 1852 that of political philosophy was added. In 1866 the name of the academy was changed by law to The College of the City of New York, and he continued at its head till 1869, after which he was emeritus professor till his death. He died July 12, 1871, in Geneva, N. Y.
