Watie, Stand

soldier, was born in 1815 in Cherokee, Ga. He served as a member of the Cherokee, Ga., legislative council, and was speaker of the lower house from 1862 till 1865. He became colonel of the first Cherokee confederate infantry regiment in October, 1861, and was promoted brigadier-general in the confederate army in 1864. He died in August, 1877.

WATKIN, WILLIAM HAMILTON, lawyer, was born March 10, 1871, in Lee, Miss. He attended the university of Mississippi; studied law, and has since attained prominence as an able lawyer of Jackson, Miss.
