Ward, Samuel
lawyer, jurist, state legislator, congressman, governor, was born May 27, 1725, in Newport, R. I. He was a member of the general assembly from 1756 to 1759; was chief justice in 1761; and was governor in 1762, and from 1765 to 1767. He was one of the founders of Rhode Island college, now known as Brown university. He was a delegate to the continental congress from 1774 to 1776, in which he usually presided when in committee of the whole. He died March 26, 1776, in Philadelphia, Pa.
