Waite, Morrison Remick

lawyer, jurist, state legislator, was born Nov. 29, 1816, in Lyme, Conn. In 1849 he was elected to the Ohio state legislature; and in 1871 was one of the counsel of the United States before the tribunal of arbitration at Geneva, under the treaty of Washington. In 1873 he was unanimously elected a member of the convention to amend the constitution of Ohio, and was made its president. In 1874 he was nominated and confirmed as chief justice of the supreme court of the United States. He died March 23, 1880, in Washington, D. C.
