Upton, William W
lawyer, jurist, state legislator, congressman, author, was born in July, 1817, in Victor, N. Y. He was a representative in the Michigan state legislature in 1847; and was prosecuting attorney at Lansing, Mich., from 1847 to 1852. In the latter year he moved to California; and was a representative in the California legislature in 1856. He was prosecuting attorney of Sacramento county from 1861 to 1863. In 1864 he moved to Oregon; and was an associate justice of the supreme court of Oregon from 1867 to 1872, and chief justice of that court from 1872 to 1874. In 1877-85 he was second comptroller of the treasury of the United States at Washington. He is the author of Digest of Decisions of the Second Comptroller of the Treasury, 1869-84.
