Tyner, James Noble
lawyer, state senator, congressman, governor, was born Jan. 17, 1826, in Brookville, Ind. He was secretary of the Indiana senate for four sessions from 1857; and was a presidential elector in 1860. He was a special agent of the postoffice department from 1861 to 1866; and was elected to the forty-first, forty-second and forty-third congresses.
Immediately after leaving congress he was appointed governor of Colorado. In 1875 he was appointed second assistant postmaster-general, which position he held until 1876, when he was promoted to the post of first assistant postmaster-general, continuing in office until 1881. During 1889-93 he was law adviser of the postoffice department. 4
