Treat, Samuel

educator, lawyer, jurist, journalist, was born Dec. 17, 1815, in Portsmouth, N. H. He became assistant editor of the Missouri Reporter of St.

Louis, Mo., and subsequently editor-inchief of the St. Louis Union, practicing law in addition to his editorial duties. In 1849 he was appointed judge of the court of common pleas of St. Louis; and in 1851 was elected to that position. While holding that office in 1857 he was appointed United States district judge for the eastern district of Missouri.
