Tunnicliff, John J
lawyer, public official, was born March 17, 1841, in Penn Yan, N. Y. In 1863 he graduated from the Hamilton college, Clinton, N. Y., and the following year from the Albany Law school. Since 1865 he has practiced law in Galesburg, Ill.; was five times elected state's attorney of Knox county, and held the office during 1872-92; and in 1895 he was elected mayor of the city of Galesburg. While he held the office of state's attorney he prosecuted many important criminal cases, and convicted Frank Rande who had committed murders in various states; and nearly all of his cases, when taken to the supreme court, were generally sustained, and many important questions in criminal practice settled.
