Tracey, John P
soldier, journalist, lawyer, congressman, was born Sept. 18, 1836, in Wayne county, Ohio. He enlisted as a private in the union army in 1862, and mustered out with the rank of first lieutenant in 1865; and was commissioned lieutenant-colonel of enrollwas ed militia in 1865. He settled in Stockton and engaged in the practice of law; removed to Springfield in 1874 and engaged in journalism as the editor of a republican newspaper. He was on the Grant electoral ticket in 1868; republican candidate for railroad commissioner in 1878; and candidate for elector at large on the Garfield ticket in 1880. He was commissioned United States marshal for the western district of Missouri in 1890, and served until 1894. He was elected to the fiftyfourth congress as a republican. He secured the adoption of a reform in the judiciary department, substituting stated salaries instead of fees to attorneys and marshals of the United States courts.
