Townsend, Martin Ingham

lawyer, congressman, was born Feb. 6, 1810, in Hancock, Mass. In 1842-45 he was district attorney for Rensselaer county, N. Y.; attorney for the northern district of New York during 1879-87; and a member of the constitutional commission of 1890.

He was elected a representative in the forty-fourth and forty-fifth congresses as a republican.

TOWNSEND, MRS. MARY ASHLEY [VAN VOORHEES], author, poet, was born about 1836 in Lyons, N. Y. She is a popular poet of New Orleans; and the author of Xariffa's Poems; Down the Bayou, and Other Poems; Distaff and Spindle; The Captain's Story, a Poem; and The Brother Clerks.
