Thorpe, Thomas Bangs
artist, author, was born March 1, 1815, in Westfield, Mass. He was an artist and author of New Orleans in 1836-53, and in later life of New York city. Niagara as It Is is his finest painting. His writings include The Hive of the Bee Hunter; Tom Owen the Bee Hunter; Mysteries of the Backwoods; Our Army of the Rio Grande; Our Army at Monterey; A Voice to America; Scenes in Arkansas; and Lynde Weirs, an Autobiography. He died in October, 1878, in New York city.
