Thorburn, Grant
merchant, author, was born Feb. 18, 1773, in Scotland. He was a Scottish nail-maker who came to America in 1794, and subsequently established himself in New York city as a seedsman. He was a noted figure in his day, not only as the hero of Galt's novel, Lawrie Todd, but because of his eccentricities. He was the author of Lawrie Todd's Notes on Virginia; Fifty Years' Reminiscences of New York; Men and Manners in Great Britain; Hints to Merchants, Married Men, and Bachelors; and Forty Years' Residence in America. died Jan. 21, 1863, in New Haven, Conn.
