Thompson, Smith
lawyer, jurist, was born Jan. 17, 1768, in Stanford, N. Y.
In 1801 he was district attorney in the middle district of New York; was judge of the supreme court of New York from 1802 to 1814; and was chief justice from 1814 to 1818. He was secretary of the navy from 1818 to 1823; and was an associate justice of the United States supreme court from 1823 until his death. He died Dec. 18, 1843, in Poughkeepsie, N. Y.
