Taylor, John
lawyer, congressman, United States senator, governor, was born May 4, 1770, in Columbia, S. C. He served in the South Carolina state legislature a number of years; was a presidential elector in 1797; was a representative in congress from South Carolina from 1807 to 1809, and also from 1817 to 1821. He was a senator in congress from 1810 to 1816; was a trustee of the South Carolina college in 1806; a state senator in 1810 and 1822; and was governor of the state from 1826 to 1828. He was also at one time receiver of public moneys in Mississippi territory. He died April 16, 1832, in Columbia, S. C.
