Tappan, Eli Todd
educator, college president, author, was born April 30, 1824, in Steubenville, Ohio. In 1844-45 he was mayor of Steubenville, and he was superintendent of the public schools there in 1858-59. From 1868 till 1875 he was president of Kenyon college, Gambier, Ohio, where he was professor of mathematics from 1875 till 1887. In 1887 he was appointed state commissioner of common schools of Ohio, which post he now holds.
He has published a Treatise on Plane and Solid Geometry; a Treatise on Geometry and Trigonometry; Notes and Exercises on Surveying for the Use of Students in Kenyon College; and Elements of Geometry.
