Taffe, John
lawyer, state legislator, congressman, was born Jan. 30, 1827, in Indianapolis, Ind. He was elected to the territorial legislature in 1858 and 1859. In 1860 he was elected to the council; and in the winter of 1861 was made president of that body. In 1862 he raised a regiment of cavalry for service against the Indians, and was made a major. In 1866 he was elected a representative from the new state of Nebraska to the fortieth congress; and was re-elected to the fortyfirst and forty-second congresses as a republican. In 1875 he was appointed secretary of Colorado.
