Sweney, Joseph Henry

He was a sergeant in company K. twentyseventh regiment Iowa infantry, in which company he served for three years. He was colonel of the sixth regiment national guard of Iowa, for four years; and brigadier and inspector-general of the state, resigning after his election to congress. In 1883 he was elected state senator, and was re-elected in 1.887. In 1886 he was, by unanimous votes of republican and democratic senators, elected president pro tempore, and presided over the joint convention at the inauguration of Governor Larrabee and Lieutenant-Governor Hull.
