Stoughton, William Lewis

soldier, lawyer, congressman, was born March 20, 1827, in Bangor, N. Y. From 1856 to 1860 he was prosecuting attorney; and in 1861 was appointed United States district attorney for Michigan. He entered the volunteer army as lieutenantcolonel; and was brevetted a brigadiergeneral for gallantry on the field, and after the war was brevetted a major-general. In 1866 he was elected attorney-general of Michigan. In 1868 he was elected a representative from that state to the forty-first congress; and was re-elected to the forty-second congress as a republican. He died June 6, 1888, in Sturgis, Mich.
