Stokes, Montford
governor, United States senator, was born in 1760 in Wilkes county, N. C. He was elected to the United States senate, which honor he declined; and in 1816 was again elected United States senator, and served until 1823. In 1826 he went into the general assembly of North Carolina as senator; and in 1829 was elected a member of the commons. In 1830 he was again elected to the commons, and in the same year was elected governor of the state.
