Stokes, William B
soldier, agriculturist, state senator, congressman, was born Sept. 9, 1814, in Chatham county, N.
C. He served three sessions in the legislature of Tennessee-twice as a representative and once as a senator. He was elected a representative from Tennessee to the thirty-sixth congress. During the rebellion of 1861 he served as a colonel in the union army. In 1865 he was elected a representative from Tennessee to the thirty-ninth congress; and was re-elected to the fortieth and forty-firstcongresses as a union republican.
