Stewart, John W
lawyer, state senator, congressman, governor, was born in 1825 in Middlebury, Vt. He was state's attorney for his native county from 1852 to 1855. He was a representative in the state legislature in 1856 and 1857; was a state senator in 1862 and 1863; and was again in the assembly in 1864, 1865, 1866, and 1867. He was governor of the state from 1870 to 1872; and was again a representative in the legislature in 1876 and 1877. He was elected a representative from Vermont to the forty-eighth congress; and was re-elected to the fortyninth, fiftieth and fifty-first congresses as a republican.
