Stewart, Jacob Henry
surgeon, congressman, was born Jan. 15, 1829, in Clermont, N. Y. He was a member of the Minnesota state senate in 1858 and 1859; and was surgeon-general of the state from 1857 to 1863. He was appointed surgeon of the first Minnesota volunteer infantry in 1861. He was surgeon of the board of enrollment in 1864 and 1865.
He was postmaster of St. Paul from 1865 to 1870; and mayor of St. Paul in 1864, 1865, 1872, 1873 and 1874. He was elected a representative from Minnesota to the forty-fifth congress as a republican. He died Aug. 25, 1844, in St. Paul, Minn.
