Stahel, Julius
soldier, journalist, was born Nov. 4, 1825, in Hungary. In 1863 he was commissioned major-general.
He resigned from the army in 1865. In 1866 he was made United States consul at Yokohama, Japan, but after three years' residence there he was compelled to return on account of impaired health. He was engaged in mining from 1870 till 1877, when he was again appointed consul to Japan. There he remained until March, 1884, when he was made United States consul-general at Shanghai.
