Smith, William (Clergyman author was born)

clergyman, author, was born in 1721 in Scotland. He was an episcopal clergyman of Philadelphia who came to America from Scotland in 1751, and in 1754 was made first provost of the university of Pennsylvania. A General Idea of the College of Mirania first brought him to the knowledge of Franklin, who was then laying plans for the university. He was author, also, of Brief Account of the Province of Pennsylvania; Sermons; and Discourses on Public Occasions. He died May 14, 1803, in Philadelphia, Pa.
