Stewart, James Fleming
lawyer, congressman, was born June 15, 1851, in Paterson, N. J. He graduated at the Law school of the university of New York in 1870, taking the first prize for best examination.
He practiced law in New York city until 1875, since which time he has followed his profession in his native city. He was three times appointed recorder of Paterson, the criminal magistrate of the city, which office he occupied at the time of his election to congress.
He was elected to the fifty-fourth and re-elected to the fifty-fifth congress as a republican.
