Shepley, Ether
lawyer, jurist, state legislator, United States senator, was born Nov. 2, 1789, in Groton, Mass.
He was in the Massachusetts legislature in 1819; was a member of the convention that framed the first constitution of Maine in 1820; and was for thirteen years attorney of the United States for Maine. He was a senator in congress from Maine from 1833 to 1836. After leaving the senate of the United States he was chosen a justice of the supreme court of Maine, and subsequently chief justice of the same, which latter position he held until 1855. He died Jan. 15, 1877, in Portland, Maine.
