Shepley, George Forster

soldier, lawyer, jurist, governor, was born Jan. 1, 1819, in Saco, Maine. He removed to Portland, Maine; was appointed by President Polk United States district attorney, which position he held until 1861. When the civil war broke out he became colonel of the twelfth Maine volunteers.

He was made brigadier-general; and was military governor of Louisiana from 1862 to 1864. He was military governor of Richmond on its surrender in 1865. 1871 he was United States circuit judge of the first circuit. He died July 20, 1878, in Portland, Maine.
