Rives, Thomas
lawyer, jurist, state senator, was born June 17, 1806, in Nelson county, Va. He settled in Albemarle county, Va., from which he was elected to the state legislature at intervals from 1835 to 1861, the latest years in the senate. In 1866 he was appointed to the supreme court of appeals of Virginia, and his opinions were published in several volumes. He gave up his seat on the bench in 1869; and in 1871 was appointed United States district judge for the western district of Virginia.
