Reed, Joseph R

soldier, lawyer, jurist, state senator, congressman, was born March 12, 1835, in Ashland county, Ohio.

He was a member of the Iowa state senate in 1866 and 1868; was judge of the district court from Sept. 1, 1872, to Jan. 1, 1884, and judge of the supreme court of the state from the latter date to 1889; and was elected to the fifty-first congress as a republican. In 1891 he was appointed chief justice of the court of private law claims, which position he still holds.
