Raymond, Henry Jarvis

journalist, lawyer, state legislator, congressman, author, was born Jan. 24, 1820, in Lima, N. Y. In 1849 he was elected to the New York state assembly; was re-elected and made speaker. In 1851 he established the New York Times. He was subsequently chosen lieutenant-governor of New York; and was again elected to the state legislature. In 1864 he was elected a representative from New York to the thirty-ninth congress. He was the author of Life of Lincoln; Political Lessons of the Revolution; History of the Administration of Lincoln; and Letters to Mr. Yancey. He died June 18, 1869, in New York city.
