Purce, Charles Lee
clergyman, educator, college president, was born July 4, 1856, in Charleston, S. C. He received the rudiments of his education in the public, private and high schools of his native city; attended the Benedict college of Columbia, S. C., the Richmond Theological seminary, and correspondence courses in Greek and Hebrew at Chicago, Ill. He has attained eminence as a baptist clergyman, and has filled pastorates in South Carolina, Alabama and Louisville, Ky. For two years he filled the chair of Greek and Latin in the Selma university, Ala.; and for eight years was its president. He has been the general missionary of the American Baptist Home Mission society of New York for Alabama, and is now the president of the State university of Louisville, Ky.
