Porter, Peter Buel
soldier, lawyer, congressman, was born Aug. 4, 1773, in Salisbury, Conn. He was a representative in congress from New York from 1809 to 1813, and from 1815 to 1816, when he resigned. In 1813 he was made majorgeneral, and chief in command of the state troops. Soon after the war he was chosen secretary of the state of New York; and in 1816 was appointed commissioner under the treaty of Ghent. In 1828 he was appointed secretary of war. He died March 20, 1844, in Niagara Falls, N. Y.
