Pope, John
soldier, author, was born March 16, 1822, in Louisville, Ky. He was a prominent general in the federal army during the civil war.
In 1882 he was made a major-general in the regular army; assigned to the department of the Pacific in 1884; and retired in 1886. He was the author of a Memoir of his campaigns entitled Campaign in Virginia; and also published a valuable work on Explorations from the Red River to the Rio Grande. He died Sept. 23, 1892.
