Platt, Orville Hitchcock

lawyer, state legislator, United States senator, was born July 19, 1827, in Washington, Conn. He was clerk of the Connecticut state senate in 1855 and 1856; and was secretary of the state in 1857. He was a state senator in 1861 and 1862; and was a representative in the state legislature in 1864 and 1869, serving the latter year as speaker. He was elected a senator of the United States from Connecticut as a republican for the term of six years from March 4, 1879; in 1885 was re-elected for a second term, ending March 3, 1891; and was again elected in 1897 for term ending in 1903. mer- PLATT, THOMAS COLLIER, chant, banker, congressman, United States senator, was born July 15, 1833, in Owego, N. Y. He was president of the Tioga National bank at its organization; and became largely interested in the lumbering in Michigan. He was county clerk of the county of Tioga in 1859, 1860, and 1861; and was elected to the forty-third and forty-fourth business congresses. He was elected United States senator in 1881, and resigned that office May 16 of the same year; and was chosen secretary and director of the United States Express company in 1879, and in 1880 was elected president of the company. He was member and president of the board of quarantine commissioners of New York from 1880 till 1888. He was president of the Southern Central railroad. He was elected United States senator in 1896, and took his seat March 4, 1897. His term of service will expire March 3, 1903.
