Pitman, Benn
author, educator, art critic, was born July 22, 1822, in Trowbridge, England. In 1857, after four years of experimenting he was the first to perfect the modern method of producing and printing from relief copper plates. For this he received a silver medal from the Art and Manufacturers' exposition. During 1873-93 he was a a lecturer on art and teacher of practical art in the Cincinnati Art academy. He is the author of The Reporter's Companion; Manual of Phonography; and Phonographic Dictionary.
