Pickens, Israel
state legislator, congressman, United States senator, governor, was born Jan. 30, 1780, in Mecklenburg county (now Cabarrus), N. C. He served one year in the North Carolina state legislature. He was a representative in congress from that state from 1811 to 1817, in which year he was appointed register of the land office of Mississippi territory. On removing to Alabama he was elected governor of that state in 1821, and in 1826 was a senator in congress from Alabama. He died April 24, 1827, in Cabarrus, N. C.
