Phelps, John Wolcott

soldier, author, poet, was born Nov. 13, 1813, in Guilford, Vt. He was a writer of Brattleboro, Vt., who was an officer in the United States army in the Mexican war and became a brigadier-general of United States volunteers in the civil war. In 1880 he was the presidential nominee of the American party. He was the author of Sibylline Leaves; Good Behavior; History of Madagascar; and The Fables of Florian in English Verse. He died Feb. 2, 1885, in Guilford, Vt.
