Packard, Jasper

soldier, lawyer, journalist, congressman, was born Feb. 1, 1832, in Austintown, Ohio. He moved to Laporte, Ind., and there edited the Union newspaper. In 1865 he was appointed a brigadier-general by brevet, for meritorious services during the war. In 1866 he became auditor of Laporte county, holding the office until 1868, when he was elected a representative from Indiana to the forty-first congress. He was re-elected to the forty-second and forty-third congresses as a republican. He is now the editor and owner of The Evening and Weekly Tribune of New Albany, Ind.
