Newell, Charles M
sailor, physician, author, poet, was born Nov. 23, 1821, in Concord, Mass. When seventeen years of age he went to sea as a sailor, and followed that occupation. He became master of a ship at the age of twentysix, and continued so for ten years. He then left the sea to study medicine, in which he has been very successful. He has published, in addition to medical literature, six volumes of prose, entitled The Voyage of the Fleetwing; The Isle of Palms; The Wreck of the Greyhound; and others, which have given him a worldwide reputation as a writer of sea-stories.
