song writer, was born Feb. 5, 1854, in New Marlborough, Mass. She has furnished songs and music to many eminent composers, and her songs and poems are read and sung throughout America.
She is the author of thousand poems, which have appeared in the Youth's Companion, Arthur's Magazine, and the leading publications of America. poems have a Her also been given a place in Woman in Sacred Song, and other standard collections.
NEWELL, MCFADDEN ALEXANDER, educator, journalist, was born Sept. 7, 1824, in Ireland. He became principal of the State Normal school at Baltimore in 1865, and in 1868 state superintendent of public instruction. With Prof. William R. Creery he has published a series of text-books, entitled The Maryland Series; and he is the author of annual state school reports.
