Flagg, Jared Bradley

clergyman, artist, author, was born June 16, 1820, in New Haven, Conn. He studied for a short time with his brother George, and subsequently with his uncle, Washington Allston.

When but sixteen years old he exhibited in the National Academy of Design a portrait of his father which received favorable notice from the artists and art critics of the time.

He settled in Hartford, where he became prominent as a portrait painter. He was called to the rectorship of Grace church of Brooklyn Heights, where he remained eight years. In his later life, while still pursuing his art, he devoted a portion of his time to literary work, and in 1892 published his first book, The Life and Letters of Washington Allston.

FLAGG, JOHN FOSTER BREWSTER, physician, author, was born May 12, 1804, in Boston, Mass. He was a Philadelphia physician; and the author of Ether and Chloroform and Their Employment in Surgery, Dentistry, Midwifery, etc. died Sept. 8, 1872, in West Chester, Pa.
