Mitchell, Stephen Mix

lawyer, jurist, congressman, United States senator, was born Dec. 9, 1743, in Wethersfield, Conn. In 1779 he was appointed a judge of the Hartford county, Conn., court; and in 1790 placed at the head of that court. He was a delegate to the old congress in 1783 and 1785; and in 1793 was appointed to the United States senate, which position he held until 1795. In 1795 he was appointed judge of the superior court of Connecticut; and in 1807 chief justice of that court, which office he held until 1814. He died Sept. 30, 1835, in Wethersfield, Conn.
