Mitchell, Joseph Daniel

conchologist, legislator, was born Oct. 22, 1848, in Point Comfort. He has served as a representative in the state legislature of Texas, and is the father of the fish and oyster laws of Texas. He has published notes on Texas shells; and is a member of the Texas Academy of Science, and the Smithsonian institution.

MITCHELL, MRS. LUCY MYERS [WRIGHT], archæologist, author, was born in 1845 in Persia. She was an archæologist who spent much of her life abroad. Her only writing, a History of Ancient Sculpture, is one of the best books in English upon Greek art. She died in 1888.
