Metcalfe, John A

lawyer, orator, was born April 19, 1853, in Clark county, Ky. For many years he taught school in Illinois, and since 1884 has practiced law in Iowa, and has a lucrative practice in Newton. As a political orator he is well known in the west, and lectured extensively during the political campaign of 1896, gaining a reputation as a brilliant and patriotic platform speaker.

METCALFE, LYNE SHACKELFORD, soldier, merchant, congressman, was born April 21, 1822, in Madisonville, Ky. He moved to St. Louis, Mo., in 1863; served in the city council there, and was elected a representative from Missouri to the forty-fifth congress as a republican.
