Messer, Asa
educator, college president, was born in 1769 in Methuen, Mass. After six years of service he was advanced in 1796 to the professorship of learned languages in the Brown university. In 1799 he was transferred to the chair of mathematics and natural philosophy, and on the resignation of Jonathan Maxcy in 1802 was appointed president of the college. He died Oct. 11, 1836, in Providence, R. I.
MESSINGER, ROBERT HINCKLEY, HINCKLEY, poet, was born in 1811 in Boston, Mass.
His poems were written between 1827 and 1832, and appeared in the New York American. The principal one, Give Me the Old, was published in that journal in 1838.
He died Oct. 1, 1874, in Stamford, Conn.
