Merriman, Truman Adams

soldier, lawyer, journalist, congressman, was born Sept. 5, 1839, in Auburn, N. Y. He entered the union army in 1861 as captain in the ninety-second New York infantry, and was mustered out of service in 1864 as lieutenant-colonel. In 1884 he was elected a representative from New York to the forty-ninth congress, and was reelected to the fiftieth congress as a democrat. MERRIMON, AUGUSTUS SUMMER- FIELD, jurist, legislator, United States senator, was born Sept. 15, 1830, in North Carolina. He was a member of the legislature of North Carolina in 1860, and was elected a judge of the superior court in 1866, but in 1867 resigned rather than obey a military order. He was elected to the United States senate for the term commencing in 1873 and ending in 1879.
