Mclean, John
lawyer, jurist, congressman, was born March 11, 1785, in Morris county, N. J. In 1812 he became a candidate to represent his district in congress from Ohio, and was elected by a large majority. In 1814 he was again elected to congress by a unanimous vote, and remained member of the house of representatives until 1816, when, the legislature of Ohio having elected him a a judge of the supreme court of the state, he resigned his seat in congress at the close of the session. He remained six years upon the supreme bench of Ohio; and in 1822 was appointed commissioner of the general land office. In 1823 he became postmaster-general; and in 1829 was appointed a justice of the United States supreme court. His name was thrice brought before conventions as a candidate for the presidency. He died April 4, 1861, in Cincinnati, Ohio.
