soldier, state senator, congressman, was born Aug. 1, 1824, in Washington county, Mo. In 1862 he was elected to the Missouri state senate. He served as a brigadier-general of militia in 1863; and was appointed a surgeon in the army, which position he resigned. He was again elected to the state senate in 1866. He was elected a representative from Missouri to the fortieth congress, to fill a vacancy; and was reelected to the forty-first and forty-second congresses as a democrat.
